How Alex Verdugo changed his stripes and found a sweet spot with the Yankees after Red Sox exile

BOSTON — While the Yankees are at Fenway Park this weekend, they may want to send a nice bottle of wine over to the Red Sox’s front office.

Of course, they already sent Greg Weissert, Richard Fitts and Nicholas Judice across the way, and from that perspective, it’s too early to tell whether the Red Sox will end up on the right side of the trade.

But two and a half months into the season, Alex Verdugo has been just about everything the Yankees could have hoped for when they acquired him in December.

Verdugo has established himself as their regular cleanup hitter (against right-handlers), a contact-oriented, left-handed bat behind Aaron Judge to break up the Yankees’ string of thumpers.
