Tiger Woods, recovering from surgery, opts out of US Open

Tiger Woods has waved the white flag, withdrawing from next month’s U.S. Open, the USGA announced Monday.

Woods withdrew from the Masters before the third round last month after making the 36-hole cut, tying the record of Gary Player and Fred Couples for 23 consecutive made cuts at the tournament.

While playing in his 25th Masters, Woods aggravated his plantar fasciitis, he reported on Twitter, and he has since undergone subtalar fusion surgery on his ankle with no time frame for his return to play.

The U.S. Open will take place June 15-18 at Los Angeles Country Club.

Throughout the Masters, Woods appeared to have trouble walking due to injuries sustained to his surgically repaired right leg stemming from his 2021 one-car crash in suburban Los Angeles.

“The first goal is to recover and lead a much more enjoyable day-to-day life,” Woods’ manager Mark Steinberg said.

The USGA on Monday announced 33 players have been added to the Open field, increasing the number of fully exempt players to 84.

Players such as Jason Day and Rickie Fowler, who had not previously been exempt, were among a group of 25 within the game’s top 60 to be awarded exemptions.

The cutoff for those ranked inside the top 60 who are not exempt is June 12.

Tyrrell Hatton (No. 18) is the highest-ranked player in the world who has not received an exemption into the Open.

Cameron Davis, who rose to 49th in the world rankings with a fourth-place tie at the PGA Championship over the weekend, has received an exemption.

Hayden Buckley, Mackenzie Hughes, Taylor Montgomery, Andrew Putnam and Nick Taylor are the top five players in the FedExCup standings who earned exemptions that previously had not.

Thriston Lawrence and Jordan Smith are the top two out of the 2022 DP World Tour final points list who now are exempt.

More PGA and LIV players vied for a spot on Monday at the first of 10 U.S. final qualifiers in Dallas.

In addition, the winner of the NCAA Division I Championship will earn an exemption, as will multiple winners of PGA Tour events over the next month.
