Infant drowns in tub after being left alone by 14-year-old playing on computer

A baby has drowned in a bathtub in Houston while the mother was busy cooking and a 14-year-old who was left in charge of the infant was playing on the computer, police said.

The tragedy unfolded just before 6:40 p.m. Thursday when police were called to an apartment on West Bellfort Boulevard for a report of an unresponsive child.

The infant’s mother had stepped away to finish cooking dinner and left the 14-year-old in charge of the baby’s bath time, police speaking told the station KTRK.

The teen filled the tub with water, placed the baby inside and then exited the bathroom to use the computer, leaving the youngster unsupervised, cops said.

It was not until the baby’s mother returned and found the bathtub overflowing with water that she discovered that her baby had drowned.

Police said family members allegedly forgot that the infant was alone in the tub, which overfilled possibly because the drain was clogged.

Investigators have not revealed the gender or the exact age of the baby, only saying the infant was under a year old.

The baby was rushed to Texas Children’s Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

A Houston Police Department spokesperson told The Post Friday that homicide detectives are investigating the drowning death, but so far no criminal charges have been filed.
