The game between the Red Sox and Phillies in Philadelphia on Friday night was paused after a fan fell into the Red Sox bullpen.
Phillies reliever Jose Alvarado and other players quickly motioned for help after the fan tumbled over a protective railing down one level into the visitor’s bullpen at Citizens Bank Park.
EMTs rushed to provide medical support as security cleared out fans from the park’s Ashburn Alley section.
Those in the Red Sox bullpen were shaken up as the fan, who was wearing a Phillies jersey, received attention, according to multiple reports.
The fan was awake and alert as he was taken out of the upper level of the visitor’s bullpen in a stretcher and removed from the field via cart.
The fan was taken to the trauma center at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, according to medical personnel on the scene.
Phillies reporter Taryn Hatcher explained what happened on NBC Sports Philadelphia.
“Our understanding is a ball was tossed up to a fan, and it landed in that flower bed that sits at the bottom of the fence up there above the visitors’ bullpen,” she said.
“The fan tried to reach down and get the ball, took a tumble, and ended up in the bullpen. That’s what we’re hearing, but we will provide more updates as they become available.”
The way the railing is set up over the bullpen at Citizens Bank Park it is a steep fall.
The incident occurred after the first batter of the game, Red Sox outfielder Raimel Tapia, got to second on an error by Phillies outfielder Kyle Schwarber.
The game resumed after the scary 10-minute delay.
